Edmonton — Everybody likes to cheer the underdog.

It’s the reason why we’re deluged with – sorry, I mean blessed by – so many variations on the talent show theme. Simon Cowell figured out this very basic equation a number of years back, and now rakes in uncountable, even obscene amounts of dollars pandering to our very basic need to see the good guy or girl win out.

Considering much of the garbage churned out by television’s premier tastemaker, it’s a relief that on occasion someone sneaks through that actually justifies even a slight bit of the hype.
