Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts has already sung for Luciano Pavarotti - and now he is bringing opera to the people. The 36-year-old from Port Talbot in south Wales was transformed from mobile phone salesman to opera sensation when he won the English TV talent show in June. His performance of Giacomo Puccini's Nessun Dorma in the grand final brought the house down, and landed Potts Stg100,000 ($A248,000) in prize money and a record deal. It has since become one of the all-time most watched clips on YouTube, with over 10 million viewings in nine days. Now the shy classical music lover is in Australia for a promotional visit ahead of a national tour next April. Potts says his life has changed immeasurably since he rocketed to fame.

Seventies soft rock band America and overnight opera sensation Paul Potts are to perform in Rotorua. In a coup for Rotorua, Grammy Award winners America, who have been making music for 35 years, will perform at the Energy Events Centre on December 14 as part of their Live in Concert tour. The band will also perform in Wellington and Christchurch in December and Rotorua beat Auckland to host a concert on the back of the success of the Glen Campbell concert in March. America, then consisting of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek, found fame in 1972 with the song A Horse With No Name.

In seven days, 36-year-old British man Potts went from selling mobile phones to winning Britain's Got Talent and signing a one million pound ($2.4 million) record deal. His debut rendition of Puccini's famous "Nessun Dorma" was not quite Pavarotti, yet there was something about the portly man from South Wales with his crooked teeth and hard luck story that made him an instant sensation. Within hours of his performance, millions of internet users had started clicking on to see him on YouTube. Potts is in Australia this week as part of a world tour to promote his first album, which has already hit the number one spot in Britain and across much of Europe.

Bullies who targeted chart star Paul Potts have apologised to the Britain's Got Talent winner. The Port Talbot singer has revealed his former tormentors have been getting in touch to apologise for picking on him at school. The singer was bullied by other pupils because of his love of opera, the same passion that has now made him a chart success. Paul said: "I've turned my negatives into positives. "I've had one or two people who I knew from back then call and congratulate me. "In fact one who used to bully me sent me a message on one of my websites and apologised. "As far as I'm concerned, though, what's in the past stays in the past. "It's done and you can't change it." Paul is currently in Australia promoting his debut album, One Chance.

HONG KONG, China—Paul Potts’ voice sounded raspy and almost faltered near the end of “Time to Say Goodbye” (“Con Te Partiro”), the first of three numbers he sang for the media during his promotional appearance here recently.

He would later explain that he had a nasty case of laryngitis and was getting over a heavy cold.

“Opera can be very challenging,” he said, laughing, “especially when you’re running out of breath.”

Born in Bristol, England and currently a resident of South Wales, Potts, 37, is the overnight celebrity who won the maiden edition of “Britain’s Got Talent” (“BTG”), the UK version of the widely popular search-for-a-singing star TV show “American Idol.”

Potts - from cellphone salesman to opera poppet
August 25, 2007

-----------------------------------------------------------
If Paul Potts wan't such a poppet, I might have been tempted to throttle him. This is because he says the same things, over and over and most of these things he's so fond of saying are platitudes.

"I'm just me," he says, and, "I'm just who I am." He says these things, oh, at least a thousand times and that's not counting all the times he's said them to other people.

Other favourites are, "I just do feel incredibly privileged to be doing what I love doing," and, "I'm just taking one day at a time."

Singing took him to No 1 in the charts, then across the world to New Zealand. Unlikely Welsh superstar Paul Potts talks to Rachael Fergusson about his life-changing experience.

It is a real-life fairytale - the former cellphone salesman turned famous opera singer.

It happened to Paul Potts, a 36-year-old Welshman who won Britain's Got Talent, a New Zealand Idol-type competition. Singers, actors, magicians, bartenders and dancers of any age battled it out to win cash and perform in front of the Queen.

Potts won, and now is in New Zealand promoting his aptly named album One Chance.

Paul Potts in China 22/8/2007

TV talent winner Paul Potts is in Hong Kong promoting his album One Chance and soon goes on to tour New Zealand and Australia .

The 36 year-old former phone salesman from Port Talbot topped HMV Hong Kong's Classical Chart for three consecutive weeks.

He told Chinese TV station CCTV: "I never dreamed that I would be able to actually find myself on the other side of the world from where I live, doing what I love doing.

“And you know, if somebody told me six months ago that I would be here. I would've told them, you know, get out of here, there is no way on earth that that would happen."

Potts will sing for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance in early December.

"I am sure that I will do what I normally do, think of it off, and try to think of it in advance. But at the end, I am someone who really doesn't rehearse anything that I say.

“So hopefully, I will say the right thing," said Paul.

He won a TV talent competition. Now he has a new album and is an overnight sensation. He's Paul Potts, winner of "Britain's Got Talent," which is the U.K.'s answer to American idol.

Now the 36 year-old vocalist is in Asia, promoting his debut album. The Album "One Chance," topped HMV Hong Kong's Classical Chart for three consecutive weeks.

Potts astounded both judges and the "Britain's Got Talent" audience when he first sang on the show. His world class operatic voice was an instant hit with viewers who voted for him in droves to win the competition.

The British television show was created by Simon Cowell, the man behind "American Idol".

Since his victory, Potts has become an overnight success not only in Britain, but throughout the United States, Australia and parts of Asia.

The former mobile phone salesman claims he spent most of his life feeling insignificant.

Potts used to perform with the Bath Opera, but fear of rejection always prevented him from trying to make it professionally.

A bit of Potts luck

August 19, 2007

PAUL Potts, a shy 36-year-old from Bristol, gave himself one chance to crack the big time doing what he loves, and he did it.

The former mobile phone salesman entered TV talent quest Britain's Got Talent this year and won the whole box and dice.

"It was me who convinced me to go on the show,'' Potts says.

"I wasn't sure that I was good enough so I ended up tossing a coin and doing it by heads or tails. It landed on heads, which was the go-ahead to send in an application.''

In a moment that is now famous, Potts strolled out on to stage looking awkward and nervous in a "35-pound'' ($85) suit and declared to the judges - show creator Simon Cowell and fellow judges Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan - that he was going to sing opera.

The world of show business seemed to be a million miles away for Paul Potts when he first stepped on the stage to compete in "Britain's Got Talent."

A mobile phone sales person by day, an opera singer in secret, Paul Pott's dream was, "To spend my life doing what I feel I was born to do -- to sing opera."

It was his secret because, like most of us I am sure, he had felt that look from others -- the one you get when you share your dreams with negative people who "think small."

When I watched the judges' initial reaction to Pott's dream to sing opera, and then watched the judges' and the crowd's final reaction, there was no question that he had a chance of making his dream come true. The emotion behind Paul Potts' performance was so powerful that anyone watching would want to jump out of their chair and take some type of action to reach for their dreams.

PAUL Potts has won glowing praise for his debut album in Korea, as the former Port Talbot mobile phone salesman continues to take the world by storm.

“The album is about a human story more than music,” said reviewer Chung Ah-young, writing in the Korea Times newspaper.

* Personal Note - I don't like how they wrote "Even in Korea" as if they believe Koreans are not normal.  I thought that was politically incorrect.

Winner of Britain’s Got Talent Paul Potts topped the UK album charts with his debut release One Chance – just weeks before his appearance in Carlisle.

The 36-year-old opera singer is living his dream after being voted the winner of the television talent show a few weeks ago after belting out his hit Nessun Dorma.

Potts’ album outsold the number two album, We’ll Live and Die in These Towns by The Enemy, by more than 100,000 copies last week.

Potts, who started singing at a karaoke party dressed as Pavarotti, said: “To even get through the first round of auditions was unbelievable and to be honest even winning the show hasn’t sunk in yet at all – having a number one album is more than I would ever have dreamed of.
