MANILA, Philippines - Pop tenor Paul Potts made his Philippine debut last Wednesday night, in a sold-out concert that had him singing “Nessun Dorma” for an encore. From the incessant applause and the cheering, you can safely deduce he had acquired a sizable army of new Filipino fans.
He opened with Lara’s “Granada” with a colorful star-studded stage backdrop reminiscent of his “Britain’s Got Talent” night in London. Accompanied by a 12-member all-Filipino ensemble from the Philippine Philharmonic (six string instruments, a harp, some drums and pianist Chris Taylor), conducted by Robert Willis, Potts showed off his lyrico spinto sound and hit high notes with palpable
accuracy.
It was a popular program consisting of old favorites (theme song from “Love Story”), Neapolitan songs (Curtis’ “Non ti scordar di me”), Broadway (selections from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables”) and a special section devoted to Sigmund Romberg songs popularized by Mario Lanza .
